Once we lived in Hawaii. The above picture is of our little auxillary house we dubbed “the Tiki Room.” Our trail from there led to California where we now reside.

Why am I calling this blog Happy Trails?

Well, I was feeling a need for some Happy Trails, and thinking back I remember how much I loved Roy Rodgers and his horse Trigger and hearing The Sons of the Pioneers sing “Happy Trails.”

I not western in the sense that I wear pearly shirts with sequined horses on them—well, I would if I could find the right one.  I’m western in the sense that I use a western saddle, not an English one. I love the scent of horses. I love the country life, nature, long strolls through the woods, or the beach, whatever takes me out of doors.  City life tickles me too, I just prefer living outside it—and then going to town is special.

I will, on this blog, when inspiration strikes, address the nature of reality…do you have a handle on it?

This is my grandson and me on a California beach.

A Writing Tip

Kinda feels like walking over this bridge.

Here’s a tip that can save e-book writers a ton of grief.

Do not, they say, use spaces for paragraph indents. Do not use Tabs.

So what to use?

Paragraph indents. Go to “paragraph” and under “first line indents”place your space number there.

And what if you have written a 400 page manuscript using tabs all along?

Well, SOMETIMES if works to do a find and replace using “^t” to find tabs and replace with nothing.

SOMETIMES it doesn’t.

It didn’t.

Guess I’m in for paragraph by paragraph corrections.

Another Happy Trail

I used to take my girls to the San Diego Zoo twenty-some years ago when they were still in strollers. Yesterday we took my Grandson in his stroller. He gets to ride although, at three-years-old, he can go longer and farther than any of us.

The San Diego Zoo is a world-class Zoo, and I understand that many people are opposed to putting animals in a Zoo, but I look at them as ambassadors. Animals bring out the best in people. And without Zoos some of our wonderful animal species would perish from the earth.

A few years ago Daughter and I saw a Condor flying over the Grand Canyon, and through the zoom on the camera we could read the number clipped to its wing. That Condor was raised by a puppet parent (and humans who didn’t let his forget his was a condor) at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, a subsidiary of the San Diego Zoo. Once grown, he was released into the wild where we saw him sailing on updrafts, landing on outcroppings, and seeing the world from its lofty vantage point as he coursed over the magnificent Grand Canyon.

Walt Whitman wrote:

I think I could turn and live with animals, they are so placid and self-contain’d,

I stand and look at them long and long.

They do not sweat and whine about their condition,

They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,

They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God,

I wonder where they get those token,

Did I pass that way huge times ago and negligently drop them?

Elephant Secret to Happiness

Elephant’s secret to happiness: Ability to blow water out of nose, having no particular place to be. Favorite thing: Hurrying anyway.

Happy Trails to You

Remember those days of "Happy Trails?"

Happy trails…remember this?  Roy Rodgers and Trigger.

But then, not all happy trails are on horseback.

I’ve joined Pinterest, a really fun post board, rather like a treasure map, a gratitude board, and a favorite-things all rolled into one. But watch out, it’s addicting.

How did I find Pinterest?

John Kremer (1001 Ways to market Your Book) recommended it. He said it was the fastest growing  site, so I had to check it out.

Second, another marketing announcement site who emails me, pointed again to Pinterest. Now, two marketing experts, recommended it, so I joined the Pinterest gang. There you can post Dream Travel Places, Books You’re Read, Style, Home Decor, Design, Arts, Animals, Cut and Cuddly, Aw, Oh and Ew, you name it. It really gives you a flavor of people. Many people have repinned from me, which leads me to their site.

Another Blog?

Why am I writing another blog?

I am feeling a need for something western—thus Happy Trails. I’m not western in the sense that I wear pearly shirts with sequined horses on them—well, I would if I could find the right one.  I’m western in the sense that I use a western saddle, not an English one. I love the scent of horses. I love the country life, nature, long strolls through the woods, or the beach, whatever takes me out of doors.  City life tickles me too, I just prefer living outside it—going to visit it.
